They say that simple is best, and what can be more simple than the good old roly poly? It’s tasty, filling, versatile and very easy to make. We love it so much that we are giving you two roly poly recipes today, a sweet and a savoury one. And what’s more is that they both use the same base dough, so once you get that mastered then the world is your roly poly oyster.
Savoury Roly Poly
Ingredients
- 2 cups of self raising flour
- Or 2 cups of flour and 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 140g/5 ounces of butter
- 3 eggs
- 1 tablespoon of milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 cups of grated cheese
- Savoury fillings
- We recommend tomato sauce, bacon, beef mince and mushrooms
Equipment
- Large baking pan (approx 40cm/15” long)
- Oven
- Food Processor/blender (optional)
Method
- Preheat oven to 180C/350F
- Line a baking tin with baking/parchment paper.
- Cook your savoury fillings and put in a bowl for later.
- Rub together the salt, flour and the butter, or put them both in a food processor and blend well until they form crumbs
- Beat 2 of the eggs and add them in, mixing well
- Add the milk in a splash at a time while mixing to form a firm but not sticky dough.
- Roll the dough out thinly and cover with your savoury filling.
- Sprinkle over half your grated cheese
- Roll the dough up like a Swiss-roll and put on the baking tray
- Beat the remaining egg and give the roly poly a good egg wash.
- Sprinkle over the remaining cheese.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes.
Sweet Roly Poly
Ingredients
- 2 cups of self raising flour
- Or 2 cups of flour and 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 140g/5 ounces of butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 tablespoon of milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- Your favourite jam
- 1 cup of boiled water
- 1 cup of sugar
Equipment
- Large baking pan (approx 40cm/15” long)
- Oven
- Food Processor/blender (optional)
Method
- Preheat oven to 180C/350F
- Line a baking tin with baking/parchment paper.
- Rub together the salt, flour and the butter, or put them both in a food processor and blend well until they form crumbs
- Beat the eggs and add them in, mixing well
- Add the milk in a splash at a time while mixing to form a firm but not sticky dough.
- Roll the dough out thinly and cover generously with your favourite jam
- Roll the dough up like a Swiss-roll and put on the baking tray
- Combine the boiled water, sugar and more of your favourite jam together and mix well to form a syrup and pour half of it over the roly poly.
- Bake for 40-45 minutes and when it comes out of the oven pour over the other half of the syrup
